Fishless cycle target: 2-4 ppm.

10% ammonia to dose
24 drops Β· 1.20 mL
Use pure janitorial-grade 10% ammonia (e.g. Dr Tim's or ACE Hardware Unscented).

Fishless cycle timeline

 • Days 1-5: Dose ammonia to 2-4 ppm. Add Seachem Stability or Dr Tim's One & Only.
 • Days 5-14: Nitrite appears, ammonia drops. Maintain ammonia dose.
 • Days 14-21: Ammonia β†’ 0 in 12 h. Nitrite still present.
 • Days 21-30: Both β†’ 0 in 24 h. Cycle complete. Nitrate rising.
 • Before adding fish: Do 50% water change, then stock lightly.
Use API Freshwater Master Test Kit (liquid, most accurate). Fishless cycling takes 3-6 weeks. Bacterial starters (Seachem Stability, Dr. Tim's) can shorten to 10-14 days.

How to use the nitrogen cycle tracker

 1. Choose cycling method β€” Fishless (recommended) or fish-in (emergency only with Prime regime).
 2. Dose pure ammonia to 2 ppm β€” Use pure 10 % ammonia or Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride. Calculator returns exact drops for your volume.
 3. Add bacterial starter β€” Seachem Stability, Fritz, or Dr. Tim's cut cycling time 3–4Γ—.
 4. Test daily with API Master β€” Record ammonia / nitrite / nitrate. Cycle complete when both NH3 and NO2 return to 0 in 24 h after dosing.

The aquarium nitrogen cycle β€” what's happening chemically

Every aquarium that houses fish must support the biological conversion of fish waste to safer compounds. Fish excrete ammonia (NH3) directly through their gills as their primary nitrogenous waste. Ammonia is extremely toxic β€” 0.25 ppm burns gills and is fatal at sustained levels above 1 ppm. A tank without functioning biological filtration accumulates ammonia in hours.

Two groups of aerobic bacteria solve this problem. Nitrosomonas oxidizes ammonia to nitrite (NO2⁻). Nitrobacter and Nitrospira then oxidize nitrite to nitrate (NO3⁻). Nitrite is still toxic (0.5 ppm harms fish), but nitrate at moderate levels (below 30 ppm) is safe for most aquarium inhabitants. Plants absorb nitrate directly as a nutrient; in tanks without heavy planting, weekly water changes export accumulated nitrate.

The chemistry

NH3 + O2 β†’ NO2⁻ (Nitrosomonas)
NO2⁻ + O2 β†’ NO3⁻ (Nitrobacter / Nitrospira)

These bacteria colonize every surface in the tank β€” filter media, substrate, decor β€” but the bulk of processing happens in filter biomedia where water flow delivers ammonia and oxygen simultaneously. This is why you never replace biological filter media β€” it is the bacterial home.

Typical fishless cycle day-by-day

DayWhat happensAction
0Dose NH3 to 2 ppmTest baseline
3NH3 still 2 ppm, no NO2Wait, test daily
7–10NH3 drops, NO2 appearsRedose NH3 to 2 ppm
10–14NO2 peaks (can read > 5 ppm)Continue dosing, be patient
14–21NO2 drops, NO3 risesCycle near complete
21–28NH3 + NO2 both 0 in 24h50 % water change, add fish

Troubleshooting stalled cycles

 • Ammonia stuck at 4+ ppm: Too toxic for bacteria. Water-change 50 % to drop NH3 to 1–2 ppm. Check pH β€” cycle stalls below 6.5.
 • Nitrite stuck at 5+ ppm for weeks: Normal β€” the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria are the slower group. Keep dosing ammonia; Nitrobacter/Nitrospira will catch up.
 • Low temperature (< 72 Β°F): Bacterial growth halves below 72 Β°F. Raise to 80 Β°F during cycling, then drop to species-appropriate temp after.
 • No oxygen / poor flow: Bacteria are aerobes. Add an airstone for cycling and keep the filter at maximum flow.
 • Chlorinated tap water: Chlorine and chloramine kill bacteria instantly. Always dechlorinate (Seachem Prime, API Tap Water Conditioner) at water changes during cycling and after.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cycle a new aquarium?

A fishless cycle takes 3–6 weeks without bacterial starter, or 10–14 days with a quality starter like Seachem Stability, Dr. Tim's One & Only, or Fritz TurboStart. A fish-in cycle (fish present from day one) takes 6–8 weeks and is harder on the fish β€” expect ammonia burn, clamped fins, and possible deaths if you don't water-change aggressively. The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite both read 0 ppm for 24 hours after dosing ammonia to 2 ppm.

How much ammonia do I add for fishless cycling?

Target 2–4 ppm ammonia initially, then redose to 2 ppm every time it drops to 0. For 10 % pure ammonia (no additives): about 4 drops per 10 gallons reaches 2 ppm. Avoid janitorial ammonia with surfactants β€” use Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride or a clear 10 % ammonia from a hardware store that lists pure aqueous ammonia as the only ingredient.

What are the stages of the aquarium nitrogen cycle?

Stage 1 (days 1–7): ammonia spike from added food or bioload. Stage 2 (days 5–14): Nitrosomonas bacteria colonize and convert NH3 to NO2 (nitrite). Nitrite peaks around day 10–18. Stage 3 (days 14–28): Nitrobacter/Nitrospira bacteria convert NO2 to NO3 (nitrate). Stage 4 (day 21+): ammonia and nitrite both at 0 in 24 h after dosing β€” cycle complete.

Can I speed up the aquarium cycle?

Yes β€” several reliable methods: (1) Bottled bacteria (Dr. Tim's, Fritz TurboStart, Seachem Stability) β€” cuts cycle time to 10–14 days. (2) Seed media from an established tank β€” filter squeeze or a used sponge transplants live bacteria instantly. (3) Higher temperatures (80–84 Β°F) double bacterial reproduction rate. (4) Good oxygenation β€” bacteria are aerobes and crash in low-O2 water.

My ammonia is stuck at 4 ppm for days β€” what's wrong?

Ammonia over 5 ppm inhibits the bacteria you're trying to grow. Water-change 50 % to drop ammonia to 1–2 ppm and let the cycle continue. Also check pH β€” below 6.5 the cycle stalls because Nitrosomonas needs a near-neutral pH. Add a small amount of baking soda if pH is chronically below 6.5.

Should I cycle with fish in the tank?

No if you can avoid it. Fish-in cycling stresses or kills fish via ammonia and nitrite burn. If you must (e.g., emergency rehoming), use a Seachem Prime regime β€” it detoxifies ammonia and nitrite for 24–36 hours. Dose every day of the cycle, water-change 30 % whenever ammonia exceeds 0.5 ppm, and add bottled bacteria to speed things up. Low-bioload fish (few danio zebrafish) survive better than high-bioload species (goldfish, cichlids).

Do I need to replace filter media after cycling?

Never replace biological media (ceramic rings, lava rock, sponge) unless it physically disintegrates β€” it holds the bacteria colonies. Mechanical filter floss/pads can be rinsed/replaced monthly. When you must change biological media, do it 25 % at a time, 4 weeks apart, so the tank isn't thrown back into a cycle.
