Rat Calculators

Cage size, age, feeding and group-size calculators for pet rats — social intelligent rodents.

About rats in the United States

Pet rats are the most underrated small pet — intelligent, trainable, social, and clean. Their biggest drawback is short lifespan (2–3 years). Our rat calculators are built from Rat Fan Club, RSPCA and AFRMA husbandry standards, not outdated pet-shop information.

Why pet rats need larger cages than most owners think

RSPCA minimum is 2 cubic feet per rat. Critter Nation single cage (36×25×33 inches) houses 2–3 rats; Double Critter Nation (36×25×63) houses 4–6. Aquariums are strongly advised against — poor ventilation causes respiratory disease, the #1 killer in pet rats.

Rat calculator FAQ

Are pet rats a good first pet?

For children 8+ with adult supervision, yes. Rats bond deeply, learn tricks, and rarely bite. Their short lifespan (2–3 years) can be a downside for kids who become attached.

How many rats should I get?

Minimum 2 of the same sex. Rats are intensely social — solitary rats become depressed. Groups of 3–4 are ideal.

How accurate are these calculator results?

Our calculators implement the exact formulas used in veterinary textbooks, AAFCO/NRC nutrition standards, AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines, and peer-reviewed research. Results are accurate within the precision of the input data. For medical decisions (toxicity, drug dosing, diabetic insulin), always confirm with your veterinarian — calculators are educational tools, not clinical devices.
