About reptiles in the United States
Reptile keeping has modernized significantly since 2015 β bioactive enclosures, larger vivariums, and UV-light research (Ferguson zones) have replaced the old 'shoebox tub' husbandry. Our reptile calculators reflect current ARAV, ReptiFiles and academic husbandry standards.
What's new in reptile husbandry
PVC enclosures replacing glass aquariums (better temperature gradient), UVB for nocturnal species (even ball pythons benefit), larger footprints (ball pythons in 4Γ2Γ2 ft rather than tubs), and bioactive substrate setups that self-clean.
Reptile calculator FAQ
Do all reptiles need UVB?
Diurnal species (bearded dragons, tortoises, uromastyx) require it for vitamin D synthesis. Nocturnal and crepuscular species (ball pythons, leopard geckos) benefit from low-output UVB per current research.
Why is my reptile not eating?
Most common causes: temperature wrong (check with our humidity and Ferguson zone calculators), shedding soon, breeding season (males often fast), or stress from new setup. Refusing food for weeks warrants a vet exam.
How accurate are these calculator results?
Our calculators implement the exact formulas used in veterinary textbooks, AAFCO/NRC nutrition standards, AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines, and peer-reviewed research. Results are accurate within the precision of the input data. For medical decisions (toxicity, drug dosing, diabetic insulin), always confirm with your veterinarian β calculators are educational tools, not clinical devices.
