How to use the tortoise enclosure calculator
- Pick species — Russian, Greek, Hermann's, Sulcata, Red-foot, Leopard — each has distinct needs.
- Choose indoor table or outdoor pen — Tortoise tables (open-top) beat glass tanks; outdoor pen preferred in warm months.
- Install UVB lighting — 10–12 % UVB T5 HO tube; replace every 12 months.
- Set thermal gradient — Species-specific basking spot + cool area at species temperature range.
Tortoise enclosure requirements by species

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Russian | 6–10 in | 4 × 2 ft | 8 × 8 ft | 40–50 yr |
| Greek | 5–8 in | 4 × 2 ft | 8 × 8 ft | 50+ yr |
| Hermann's | 7–10 in | 4 × 2 ft | 8 × 8 ft | 50+ yr |
| Red-foot | 11–14 in | 6 × 3 ft | 10 × 10 ft | 50+ yr |
| Leopard | 15–18 in | 8 × 4 ft | 15 × 15 ft | 50–80 yr |
| Sulcata | 24–30 in | Temporary only | 30 × 30 ft + heated shed | 70+ yr |
Frequently Asked Questions
What size enclosure does a Russian tortoise need?
Minimum indoor 4 × 2 ft tortoise table; 8 × 4 ft ideal. Outdoor pen for warm months: 10 × 10 ft minimum. Tortoise tables (open-top box with 1 ft walls) are strongly preferred over glass tanks — tortoises see the glass barrier and circle endlessly trying to escape, causing stress. Wooden or plastic bin tables work well. Russian tortoises are active diggers — deep substrate (4+ inches) and burrow-safe enclosure walls (8+ inches above substrate) are essential.
How big do Sulcata tortoises get?
100–200+ lb adults with 24–30 inch shell length. Adult Sulcatas need an outdoor yard of at least 10 × 10 ft (30 × 30 ft is better) + a heated shed or barn for winter in temperate climates. They are completely inappropriate for apartment, small-yard, or urban keeping — many end up at rescues when owners realize the size commitment. Sulcatas live 70+ years and can crack concrete foundations.
Why are tortoise tables better than glass tanks?
Glass tanks create a “visual barrier” problem — tortoises can see out but can't pass through, causing chronic stress and compulsive wall-circling. Tortoise tables (open-top, solid sides visible to the tortoise) satisfy the tortoise's need for spatial understanding. Tables also provide better ventilation (glass tanks trap humidity and cause respiratory problems), larger usable floor area per square foot, and easier maintenance access.
Do tortoises need UVB lighting?
Yes — non-negotiable. Tortoises are strict basking/diurnal species that require 10–12 % UVB (Arcadia Dragon 12 % UVB T5 HO or Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 T5 HO) for vitamin D synthesis and shell development. Without UVB, tortoises develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) within months — soft shells, pyramiding, leg deformities, and eventual death. UVB tubes lose output — replace every 12 months even if still glowing.
What temperatures do different tortoise species need?
Species vary enormously. Russian tortoise: cool 65–70 °F, warm 85–90 °F, basking 95 °F. Greek/Hermann's: cool 65–72, warm 85–90, basking 95. Sulcata: cool 75–80, warm 95–100, basking 100–110. Red-foot (tropical): cool 75–78, warm 88–92, basking 95. Leopard tortoise: cool 75–80, warm 90–95, basking 100. All species need a cool night temperature 5–10 °F below daytime. Temperature is more critical than humidity for most tortoise species.
Can multiple tortoises live together?
Generally no, especially with males. Male-male combinations always fight. Male-female pairs lead to over-breeding (females become exhausted from constant mounting). Female-female pairs sometimes work in very large enclosures but subtle dominance bullying is common. Many keepers house tortoises solo in large enclosures for welfare reasons. Introducing adult tortoises to existing ones is rarely successful — plan for solo housing.
