Bird Calculators

Cage size and lifespan calculators for parrots, finches, cockatiels and other pet birds.

About birds in the United States

Pet birds range from 60-gram budgies with 8-year lifespans to 1.3-kg Hyacinth macaws that outlive their owners (80+ years). Cage sizing, enrichment, and correct bar spacing are the most common gaps in pet-bird care. Our bird calculators follow AAV and World Parrot Trust standards.

Why most pet-store bird cages are too small

The common 'parakeet cage' (18Γ—14 inches) is fine for one budgie for short periods but fails the wing-extension test for any bird doing more than perching. Modern standards emphasize horizontal flight space over vertical β€” birds fly horizontally, not up and down.

Bird calculator FAQ

Which birds are best for beginners?

Budgie (parakeet) β€” short lifespan if that's a concern is 5–8 years, very sociable, affordable. Cockatiels β€” longer lifespan (15–20), cuddlier. Avoid large parrots (40+ year lifespan) unless you're committed long-term.

Can birds be kept alone?

Flock species (budgies, cockatiels, conures) strongly prefer pairs. Solo parrots form intense bonds with one human and can develop severe behavioral issues if that person leaves or travels.

How accurate are these calculator results?

Our calculators implement the exact formulas used in veterinary textbooks, AAFCO/NRC nutrition standards, AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines, and peer-reviewed research. Results are accurate within the precision of the input data. For medical decisions (toxicity, drug dosing, diabetic insulin), always confirm with your veterinarian β€” calculators are educational tools, not clinical devices.
