Exotic Pet Calculators

Hedgehogs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, tarantulas and mini pigs — specialist husbandry calculators.

About exotic pets in the United States

Our exotic-pet calculators cover hedgehogs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, tarantulas, and potbelly/mini pigs. Exotic species often have stringent temperature, humidity, or legal requirements that differ significantly from traditional pets. Always verify species legality in your state, county AND city before acquiring.

Legal and ethical considerations

Sugar gliders are illegal in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Georgia and parts of NY and PA. Ferrets are illegal in California and NYC. Mini pigs are often banned by municipal zoning. Tarantulas are legal in most US states but frowned upon by insurers. Always check BEFORE buying.

Finding an exotic-pet veterinarian

Most general-practice vets don't treat exotics. Look for an 'exotic' or 'avian and exotic' clinic. Diseases in exotic pets can progress very fast — regular vet contact (annual wellness) is essential.

Exotic Pets calculator FAQ

Are hedgehogs good for beginners?

They're quiet and small, but they have specific temperature (70–85°F) and diet requirements. Below 70°F they attempt hibernation which can be fatal in captivity. They're also nocturnal — awake when you sleep.

How long do chinchillas live?

15–20 years — a MAJOR long-term commitment. Many chinchillas outlive college-age owners who get them impulsively. Consider this a lifetime decision.

How accurate are these calculator results?

Our calculators implement the exact formulas used in veterinary textbooks, AAFCO/NRC nutrition standards, AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines, and peer-reviewed research. Results are accurate within the precision of the input data. For medical decisions (toxicity, drug dosing, diabetic insulin), always confirm with your veterinarian — calculators are educational tools, not clinical devices.
