Hedgehog Cage Size & Temperature Calculator — African Pygmy Setup
Minimum 4 sq ft floor space + 12-inch solid wheel + consistent 70–85 °F temperature. Below 70 °F hedgehogs attempt hibernation, which is fatal in captive African pygmy hedgehogs. Complete setup calculator.
Calculator
Target: 72-80°F. Use ceramic heat emitter (CHE) + thermostat if room is below 72.
How to use the hedgehog cage calculator
- Check room temperature first — Must maintain 70–85 °F. If not, plan CHE + thermostat setup.
- Measure available floor space — Minimum 4 sq ft, ideal 6+ sq ft.
- Plan wheel location — Solid-surface wheel 12+ inches — a critical non-negotiable item.
- Confirm legality — Check state, county, and city regulations before acquiring.
Why captive hedgehog hibernation is fatal
African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) evolved in the savannas of central and eastern Africa, where temperatures stay consistently between 70 and 85 °F year-round. Unlike European hedgehogs (which hibernate naturally), African pygmies have no adaptive mechanism to wake from hibernation. When housing drops below 70 °F, they enter a torpor state that mimics hibernation but lacks the physiological processes needed for safe awakening.
Signs of attempted hibernation: cool to the touch (especially belly), sluggish movement, unresponsive or wobbling, curling tightly without the usual defensive display. Emergency response: place hedgehog on a warm (not hot) heating pad, hold against body heat under a blanket, slowly raise the room temperature. Most hibernation attempts are reversible if caught within 4–8 hours; attempts left overnight are typically fatal. Prevention is simple: CHE + thermostat, maintain consistent 72–78 °F.
Hedgehog cage specification checklist
- Floor space: 4 sq ft minimum; 6+ ideal; C&C or modified Ferret Nation works well.
- Substrate: Fleece liners (washable) or kiln-dried pine. No cedar (toxic), no sand, no corn cob.
- Heating: CHE (60–100 W) + thermostat. Herpstat or Jumpstart models.
- Wheel: 12-inch minimum, solid surface (CSBW, Silent Runner). Wire wheels cause foot injuries.
- Hide: Opaque hut or igloo; hedgehogs need a dark sleeping area during the day.
- Food/water: Heavy ceramic bowls + water bottle with drip-free spout.
- Litter: Some hedgehogs litter-train; provide a small corner tray with pelleted litter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What temperature do African pygmy hedgehogs need?
70–85 °F consistently, ideal 72–78 °F. Below 70 °F, hedgehogs attempt hibernation — a fatal response in captive African pygmy hedgehogs (they evolved in tropical Africa and cannot wake properly from hibernation attempts). Use a ceramic heat emitter (CHE, 60–100 W) with a thermostat (Herpstat or Jumpstart) to maintain temperature. Regular heat lamps burn hedgehogs and disrupt their nocturnal cycle.
What size cage does a hedgehog need?
Minimum 4 sq ft (24 × 36 in / 60 × 90 cm) floor space; 6+ sq ft strongly recommended. Hedgehogs are active at night — they can run 3–8 miles per night in the wild and benefit from both large floor area and a 12+ inch solid-surface wheel. Avoid wire-bottom cages (foot injuries). C&C (cubes and coroplast) cages, Ferret Nation modified, and large glass aquariums all work.
Can I keep two hedgehogs in the same cage?
No — African pygmy hedgehogs are strictly solitary as adults. Co-housing (“cage mates”) universally fails within weeks to months: fights escalate to severe injuries, one hedgehog becomes submissive and develops chronic stress, or they kill each other. Even mothers separate from their babies at weaning. Bonded pair marketing is a myth for this species. Always house separately.
What do hedgehogs eat?
High-quality low-fat cat kibble is the standard base (Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Wellness CORE, Innova Low Fat) — hedgehog-specific foods are often nutritionally inferior. Supplement with live or freeze-dried insects (mealworms, crickets, dubia roaches) 3–5 times weekly, and small amounts of cooked unseasoned chicken or scrambled egg occasionally. Avoid: milk products (lactose intolerance), grapes/raisins (toxic), avocado, nuts.
Are hedgehogs legal to own in the US?
Banned in California, Hawaii, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and parts of New York. Many cities have additional restrictions (NYC bans them despite state legality). Always check state + county + city before acquiring. Penalties for illegal ownership include confiscation of the animal and fines — check before you bond with one.
How long do hedgehogs live as pets?
Average captive African pygmy hedgehog lifespan: 3–6 years. Well-kept individuals with proper temperature, diet, and vet care can reach 7–8 years. Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease, affects 5–10 % of pet hedgehogs and reduces lifespan substantially. Cancer (particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma) is also common in older hedgehogs.
