Cat Age Calculator: Convert Cat Years to Human Years

Convert your kitty’s chronological age to human-equivalent age using the AAHA / AAFP 2021 Feline Life Stage Guidelines β€” the current veterinary standard in North America. The calculator also shows the expected lifespan delta between indoor and outdoor felines, so you can plan wellness exams, dental cleanings and senior bloodwork at the right life stage.

How is a cat’s age calculated in human years?

Felines mature quickly in their first two years and then age more gradually. The 2021 AAHA / AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines β€” the current veterinary standard in North America β€” assign approximate human-year equivalents as follows. For the full clinical framework, see the American Association of Feline Practitioners guidelines.

  • Year 1 = 15 human years
  • Year 2 = +9 (cumulative 24)
  • Each additional year = +4 human years

Do indoor cats really live longer than outdoor cats?

Lifestyle is the single biggest predictor of how long a cat lives. Indoor felines average 13–17 years; outdoor and indoor/outdoor felines average only 5–10. Traffic, predators, infectious diseases (FIV, FeLV), toxins and fights are the main causes of the gap. If you want more years with your kitty, keep them indoors or provide a safe outdoor enclosure (catio).

Cat age terminology β€” quick reference

Chronological age
How many years a kitty has actually been alive, counted from date of birth.
Human-equivalent age
The age a human would be at the same developmental / biological stage as the cat β€” what this calculator estimates.
Life stage (AAFP)
One of six categories β€” kitten, junior, prime, mature, senior, geriatric β€” used by vets to set care frequency and screening protocols.
Lenticular sclerosis
Bluish haze in the lens of older felines, usually benign, often confused with cataracts on visual inspection.
CKD (chronic kidney disease)
The most common chronic illness in mature and senior felines β€” early detection via SDMA bloodwork extends quality of life significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?

A 1-year-old cat is roughly 15 human years old β€” already a young adult. By age 2 they are approximately 24 in human years.

How do you calculate cat years to human years?

Use the AAHA/AAFP formula: year 1 = 15 human years, year 2 adds 9 (total 24), then each additional cat year = 4 human years.

How old is a 10-year-old cat in human years?

A 10-year-old cat is approximately 56 human years old per the AAHA formula (24 + 8 Γ— 4).

At what age is a cat considered a senior?

The AAFP classifies cats as mature at 7–10 years and senior at 11–14 years. Cats 15+ are geriatric. Senior cats benefit from twice-yearly vet visits and routine blood pressure and kidney screening.

Do indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats?

Significantly β€” indoor cats typically live 13–17 years, while outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats average only 5–10 years due to traffic, predators, infectious disease and toxins.

What is the oldest cat ever recorded?

Creme Puff, a cat from Texas, lived 38 years and 3 days β€” the verified record. Most healthy indoor cats reach 15–20 years.

How can I estimate the age of a rescue cat?

A veterinarian can estimate age by teeth wear (kittens get permanent teeth by 6 months), eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone. Bloodwork helps confirm.

Does breed affect how long my cat lives?

Yes. Siamese and Burmese cats often live 18–20 years. Maine Coons and Ragdolls average 12–15 due to larger size. Persian and Scottish Fold have higher risks of genetic disease.
