Cat Calorie Calculator β€” Daily kcal by Life Stage & BCS

How many calories does your kitty need each day? This calculator applies the NRC RER Γ— DER feline equations with feline-specific activity factors β€” adjusting for neuter status, life stage, and body-condition score (BCS) β€” then converts the total to cups or grams of your specific food brand. Cats over BCS 6 face a 2-3Γ— higher diabetes risk, so daily calories really matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does a cat need per day?

For a typical neutered indoor adult cat: RER Γ— 1.2 (where RER = 70 Γ— weight_kg^0.75). A 10 lb (4.5 kg) cat needs RER 217 Γ— 1.2 = 260 kcal/day.

Do senior cats need more or fewer calories?

Senior cats (11+) often need more calories due to reduced protein and fat absorption β€” the opposite of dogs. Weight loss in senior cats is a red flag for hyperthyroidism, kidney disease or diabetes.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

Body-condition score 4–5 is ideal. 6 is overweight, 7+ is obese. Check: can you easily feel ribs through a thin fat layer? Is there a visible waist from above? Obesity doubles diabetes risk.

How many times a day should I feed my cat?

2–3 meals per day for adults; kittens need 4+. Free-feeding (kibble always out) is a leading cause of feline obesity. Automatic feeders with portion control work well.

How many calories does a kitten need?

Kittens need approximately 2.5Γ— RER β€” roughly 100–150 kcal/lb/day depending on age. High-quality kitten food (AAFCO-labeled for growth) should be fed until 12 months.

Should I weigh-loss my cat with prescription food?

For BCS 7+ cats, prescription therapeutic weight-loss diets (Hill's Metabolic, Royal Canin Satiety) are more effective than simply reducing regular food, and less likely to cause hepatic lipidosis. Consult your vet.
