Aviary Size Calculator β Minimum Flight Space by Flock & Species
Minimum aviary square footage for small, medium and large birds. Includes flight length, perch sizing and multi-species compatibility warnings.
Calculator
Perch diameter
0.5 β 0.75 inches (natural branches with bark preferred)
Use 3-5 different diameters to exercise the bird's feet. Avoid sandpaper perch covers (cause sores).
Frequently Asked Questions
How big should my aviary be?
The key rule is flight length: the bird must fully extend wings and fly for at least 3 flaps without hitting a wall. For budgies, 6 feet of horizontal flight is minimum. For parrots, 10-20 feet. Height matters less than length β birds fly horizontally, not vertically.
Can I mix species in one aviary?
Cautiously. Size-match is critical β no bird should be more than 2Γ the weight of another. Safest mixes: finches + canaries, cockatiels + budgies (supervised). Never mix: large parrots with small birds (injury), aggressive species (conures, lovebirds) with peaceful ones (finches, cockatiels).
Indoor vs outdoor aviary?
Outdoor aviaries give natural sunlight (UVB for vitamin D) and flight space, but require predator-proofing (double-wire mesh 1/2-inch minimum, rat-proof floor) and weather protection. Indoor aviaries are safer year-round but need UVB bulbs and careful air quality management.
What perches are best?
Natural branches of varied diameters β the bird's toes should wrap about 3/4 of the way around. Safe woods: apple, pear, elm, willow, eucalyptus, madrona. Avoid: cedar (toxic), oak (tannins), treated lumber. Replace when chewed through.
How often to clean an aviary?
Daily: food/water bowls, visible droppings under perches. Weekly: full floor scrape/wash, perch wipe. Monthly: deep clean with bird-safe disinfectant (F10SC, dilute bleach 1:32 rinsed thoroughly). Disease can spread fast in flock settings β quarantine new birds 30-45 days before introducing.
Do birds need flight space if they free-fly in the house?
Even free-flying birds need a dedicated, safe cage for sleeping and stressful events. Flight gym time outside the cage is great but doesn't replace adequate cage size. Minimum cage size even for daily free-flyers: 2Γ wingspan in all 3 dimensions.
