Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator β€” Theobromine Risk Checker

Did your pup eat chocolate? This emergency calculator estimates the theobromine and caffeine dose from body weight, chocolate type (cocoa powder is most toxic, white chocolate barely toxic at all), and amount ingested β€” then classifies severity against the Merck Veterinary Manual chocolate toxicosis thresholds and ASPCA poison-control reference doses. One-tap dial to ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) included.

What to do

Monitor your dog for 24 hours for any changes in behavior, GI upset or unusual thirst. If any symptoms appear, contact your vet.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Minimal clinical signs expected
  • Possible mild GI upset from fat content

Symptoms usually appear within 2–12 hours and can persist for 72 hours. Theobromine has a ~17-hour half-life in dogs.

Why chocolate is toxic to dogs (the science)

Chocolate contains two methylxanthines β€” theobromine and caffeine β€” that stimulate the central nervous system and cardiac muscle. Humans metabolise these compounds in 2–3 hours; dogs take 17 hours for theobromine alone. The prolonged half-life causes concentrations to accumulate above clinically dangerous levels even after a single ingestion.

Risk thresholds (Merck Veterinary Manual)

  • < 20 mg/kg: minimal clinical signs expected.
  • 20–40 mg/kg: mild GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea) and restlessness.
  • 40–60 mg/kg: cardiac signs β€” racing heart, hypertension, tremors.
  • > 60 mg/kg: severe β€” seizures likely, potentially lethal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chocolate really poisonous to dogs?

Yes. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolise much more slowly than humans. Small amounts can cause mild GI signs; larger amounts can cause cardiac arrhythmias and seizures. The darker the chocolate, the higher the theobromine content.

How much chocolate is toxic to dogs?

Clinical signs begin around 20 mg/kg of theobromine; severe cardiac effects occur at 40–60 mg/kg; doses above 60 mg/kg are potentially lethal. A 20 lb (9 kg) dog eating 1 oz of baker's chocolate ingests ~393 mg theobromine = 43 mg/kg (severe). The same dog eating 1 oz of milk chocolate gets ~58 mg = 6.4 mg/kg (minimal).

What is the most dangerous type of chocolate?

Cocoa powder is the most concentrated at ~737 mg theobromine per ounce. Baker's chocolate (393 mg/oz) is second. Dark chocolate (205 mg/oz) and semi-sweet (150 mg/oz) are moderate. Milk chocolate is relatively low (58 mg/oz). White chocolate has almost no theobromine but the fat content can still cause pancreatitis.

How soon do chocolate toxicity symptoms appear?

Clinical signs usually appear within 2–12 hours after ingestion. Theobromine has a half-life of about 17 hours in dogs, so symptoms can persist for 24–72 hours without treatment.

What are the symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs?

Early: vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, restlessness, hyperactivity. Moderate: racing heart, high blood pressure, muscle tremors. Severe: cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, respiratory failure.

Should I make my dog vomit after eating chocolate?

Do not induce vomiting at home without veterinary guidance. Call ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) or your vet. They may direct you to induce vomiting if ingestion was less than 2 hours ago and the dog is stable.

Can my dog die from eating chocolate?

Fatal outcomes are uncommon but possible, especially with baker's chocolate, dark chocolate, or cocoa powder in small dogs. The LD50 of theobromine is 100–200 mg/kg. Prompt treatment improves prognosis significantly.

What is in cocoa bean mulch and is it dangerous?

Cocoa bean mulch used in gardens contains theobromine (~255 mg/oz). Dogs may ingest large amounts due to the appealing smell. Keep cocoa mulch away from dog-accessible areas.

How is chocolate poisoning treated?

Standard treatment: induce vomiting (if recent), administer activated charcoal, IV fluids to promote excretion, anti-emetics, cardiac monitoring, diazepam for seizures, and in severe cases lipid therapy.

Which dogs are at higher risk?

Small breeds receive higher mg/kg for the same amount. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with pre-existing heart conditions have reduced tolerance. Pregnant dogs and breeds with known seizure disorders also warrant extra caution.
