What counts as an emergency?

  • Poisoning (chocolate, grapes, xylitol, medication)

Call Poison Control FIRST (not the ER) β€” they'll tell you if you need to transport or can treat at home.

  • Difficulty breathing, blue gums, collapse

Emergency vet NOW. Don't wait for poison control. Oxygen & fluids can be life-saving.

  • Hit by car (HBC), severe trauma, bleeding that won't stop

Immobilize, use a blanket sling for larger dogs, drive to nearest ER. Call ahead.

  • Bloat (GDV) β€” distended abdomen, unproductive retching in large dog

Emergency surgery often within 1-2 hours. Skip the regular vet β€” go to 24/7 surgical ER.

  • Seizure lasting > 5 minutes or repeated within 24 hours

Emergency vet. Record a video if possible (helps diagnosis).

  • Vomit/diarrhea with blood, weakness, or lasting > 24h

Same-day vet visit. Dehydration escalates fast in cats especially.

  • Labor problems (more than 2h between puppies/kittens)

Emergency β€” possible dystocia. C-section may be needed.

  • Eye injury (discharge, squinting, blood)

Same-day vet. Eye injuries can progress from fixable to permanent in 24 hours.

Before you leave for the ER

  • βœ“ Call ahead β€” many ERs triage over the phone and can prep for your arrival.
  • βœ“ Bring medication list, recent vet records, known allergies.
  • βœ“ If poisoned: bring the packaging/container of what was ingested.
  • βœ“ Stay calm β€” your pet reads your stress. Drive safely.
