Horse Blanket Size Calculator — Chest-to-Tail Measurement & Fit Guide

Stand your horse square on flat ground. Using a flexible tape measure, measure from the center of the chest (at the breast bone) along the side of the horse, over the widest part of the shoulder, and to the point of the buttock (where the rear leg joins the body). Round UP to the nearest 3 inches for US sizing, or nearest 3 cm for European sizing. Measurements fall between sizes: always choose the larger size — too-small blankets restrict shoulder movement and rub hair off.

Most Thoroughbreds wear 72–78 inch blankets depending on build. Tall slim Thoroughbreds (16.2+ hh): 76–80 in. Stockier Thoroughbred types: 72–76 in. Measurement is more reliable than breed assumption — even within the breed, blanket sizes range 70–82 inches. A compact 15.3 hh Thoroughbred may wear a 72; a rangy 17 hh gelding may need an 80.

US sizes are in 3-inch increments measured in inches (72, 75, 78, 81, 84). European sizes are in centimeters with 3 cm increments (145, 155, 160, 165, 170 cm) measured over the top-line from withers to tail rather than chest-to-hip. A 75-inch US blanket is roughly equivalent to a 165 cm European blanket, but not exact — check the manufacturer's conversion chart. Many imported blankets list both sizes.

Check these five points: (1) Chest closure centered and fastening without pulling; (2) Shoulder gussets allow free forward movement when the horse walks; (3) Withers sit 2–3 inches in front of the blanket's front edge (covered, not pinched); (4) Tail flap sits at the tail dock, not riding up the rump; (5) No bunching at the sides or under the belly straps. Rub marks at shoulders or withers after 1–2 days indicate too-tight or wrong shape — try a different cut (narrow vs. wide fit).

Guideline for clipped horses: 30–45 °F medium weight (200g fill); 20–30 °F heavy weight (300g); below 20 °F heaviest (400g+) or layered sheets. Unclipped horses need lighter blankets 1 tier less. Wet weather: waterproof turnout required regardless of temperature — wet hair loses insulation value 60 %+. Over-blanketing is as harmful as under-blanketing — horses sweat under the blanket, hair mats, and chilling occurs when sweat cools.
