Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a goat pregnancy?

Average goat gestation is 150 days (5 months), with a range of 145–155 days. Nigerian Dwarfs tend toward 145–153; dairy breeds (Alpine, Saanen) 148–152; meat breeds (Boer, Kiko) 148–155.

How can I confirm pregnancy in goats?

Blood testing for pregnancy-specific protein B (BioPRYN) is accurate from day 30. Ultrasound confirms from day 35 and counts fetuses. Enzyme-linked pregnancy tests (Pregtone) work from day 45.

What are signs of imminent kidding?

Udder fills 3–7 days before; bagging up is the classic sign. 12–24 hours before: restlessness, pawing, isolation, soft/hollow tail base, clear discharge, occasional vocalization.

Should I separate a pregnant doe?

Move her to a clean, draft-free kidding pen 1–2 weeks before due date. Reduce social stress, provide free-choice hay and mineral, cool fresh water.

Can I milk a pregnant dairy doe?

Dry her off at day 100 for the final 50 days of gestation. This allows mammary regeneration and optimum colostrum production for kids.

What kidding supplies do I need?

7 % iodine (dip navels), towels, dental floss or clean string (umbilical tie if needed), bulb syringe, OB lube, colostrum replacer, lamb/kid bottle and nipple, scale.
