German Shepherd Puppy Weight Chart β€” Growth Month-by-Month

Expected weight for German Shepherd puppies from 8 weeks to adult. Males 65–90 lb adult, females 50–70 lb. GSDs are slow-maturing large breeds β€” skeletal growth continues through 18 months.

How to use the GSD puppy weight chart

  1. Weigh weekly through 6 months β€” Early growth is where hip/elbow dysplasia risk is set.
  2. Pick gender + line β€” Males 10–15 % heavier than females; working lines slightly smaller than show lines.
  3. Compare to breed percentile β€” Target 40th–60th percentile β€” not the top.
  4. Adjust food if growth is too fast β€” Overfeeding is worse than underfeeding in large-breed puppies.

Preventing hip & elbow dysplasia in growing GSDs

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and elbow dysplasia are polygenic conditions with approximately 20 % prevalence in GSDs. Genetics set the risk, but environment substantially modulates severity. Five factors matter during growth:

  • Diet: Large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium (≀ 1.2 % DM) through 18 months. Skip calcium and vitamin D supplements.
  • Growth rate: Target mid-percentile, not top. An overfed GSD puppy has worse joint outcomes than a breed-same genetic-risk underfed puppy.
  • Exercise: Free play on grass is great; repetitive impact (long runs, jumping out of cars, rough play with large dogs) is harmful during growth. Limit forced exercise until 14–18 months.
  • Body weight: Lean body condition (BCS 4–5/9) at all times. Excess weight adds mechanical stress during the most vulnerable growth phase.
  • Screening: OFA hip and elbow radiographs at 24 months of age. Breeder selection from OFA-tested parents is the single most important genetic lever.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a German Shepherd puppy weigh at each age?

Male GSD puppy approximate weights: 8 weeks 15 lb; 12 weeks 25 lb; 4 months 35 lb; 6 months 55 lb; 9 months 70 lb; 12 months 75–80 lb. Females track about 10–15 % lower at every age. Working German Shepherd lines (WGSL) from European working-line breeding tend to be slightly smaller and more compact than American show-line (AKC) dogs.

When do German Shepherds stop growing?

GSDs reach approximately 90 % of adult weight by 12–14 months and continue filling out to full adult weight by 18–24 months. Skeletal growth-plate closure typically completes at 16–18 months (later than smaller breeds). This is why large-breed puppy formula should be continued until 18 months, and why strenuous exercise (jumping, long runs, repetitive impact) should be limited during growth.

Is there a difference in size between GSD lines (AKC show vs. West German working)?

Yes. American/Canadian show-line GSDs tend toward the larger end (males 75–90 lb, females 60–70 lb) with the classic sloped back. West German working-line (WGWL) and Czech working-line GSDs run 5–10 % smaller and more athletic, often 65–80 lb males. DDR/East German lines are heavier-boned. East European show lines are the largest of all. If in doubt, ask your breeder about the line specifically.

My GSD puppy is growing too fast β€” what should I do?

Rapid growth is the single biggest modifiable risk factor for hip and elbow dysplasia in the breed. Switch to large-breed puppy formula (controlled calcium ≀ 1.2 % DM, controlled calorie density) if you aren't already. Feed measured portions rather than free-feeding. Skip calcium supplementation. Limit high-impact exercise until growth plates close. Target the 50th percentile on the breed chart, not the 90th.

How many meals per day for a German Shepherd puppy?

8 weeks – 3 months: 4 meals/day. 3–6 months: 3 meals. 6–12 months: 2 meals. 12+ months: 2 meals (adult schedule). Large breed + deep chested puppies should never be fed once daily due to bloat risk. Avoid exercise for 1 hour before and after meals β€” GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus / bloat) is a fatal GSD emergency triggered by running on a full stomach.

When should a GSD puppy switch from puppy to adult food?

At 18 months, or when growth stabilizes. Earlier switch (at 12 months like smaller breeds) can compromise continuing skeletal development. Later switch (past 24 months) promotes adult obesity. The 18-month mark aligns with growth-plate closure and is the consensus recommendation from AAFCO large-breed feeding guidelines.
