Puppy Feeding Chart Calculator β Cups Per Day by Age & Adult Weight
Calculate how many cups of puppy food to feed each day, from 2 months to 12 months, based on expected adult weight. Covers toy (4 lb adult) to giant (150 lb adult) breeds with AAFCO-aligned calorie targets.

How to use the puppy feeding chart calculator
- Estimate adult weight β Use our Breed Size Predictor if unknown. Otherwise use breed reference.
- Enter puppy age in weeks/months β Most accurate between 2 and 12 months.
- Read cups/day + meal schedule β Output includes total daily volume and meals/day.
- Check growth weekly β Weigh weekly and compare to breed percentile β adjust portions if deviating.
Why puppy feeding precision matters more than adult feeding
Adult dogs have substantial tolerance for portion imprecision β a Labrador fed 10 % over maintenance gains weight slowly and reversibly. Puppies don't. During the first year, skeletal and organ development depend on narrowly controlled nutrient ratios: calcium must stay in the 0.7β1.2 % range for large breeds (overshoot triggers hypertrophic osteodystrophy), growth rate must match genetic programming (too-fast growth causes hip/elbow dysplasia), and protein + calorie balance must support tissue building without promoting obesity.
This calculator projects portions based on expected adult weight and age, adjusting for breed size category. The underlying calorie math: 3β6 months puppies need approximately 2Γ the resting energy requirement (RER) of an equivalent adult weight; 6β12 months need 1.5Γ RER; adult transition shifts to 1.0β1.2Γ RER. Puppy kibble typically runs 380β450 kcal/cup, so cups-per-day translation is straightforward.
Approximate puppy daily cups by expected adult weight + age
| Expected adult weight | 3 months | 6 months | 9 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 lb (Chihuahua, Yorkie) | 0.3 cup Γ 4 meals | 0.4 cup Γ 3 meals | 0.25 cup Γ 2 meals |
| 15 lb (small mixed, Shih Tzu) | 0.5 cup Γ 4 | 0.8 cup Γ 3 | 0.65 cup Γ 2 |
| 35 lb (Beagle, medium mix) | 1.0 cup Γ 4 | 1.75 cup Γ 3 | 1.3 cup Γ 2 |
| 60 lb (Lab, GSD) | 1.5 cup Γ 4 | 2.5 cup Γ 3 | 2.0 cup Γ 2 |
| 90 lb (Mastiff, large) | 2.0 cup Γ 4 | 3.5 cup Γ 3 | 3.0 cup Γ 2 |
| 130 lb (Great Dane, giant) | 2.5 cup Γ 4 | 4.5 cup Γ 3 | 4.0 cup Γ 2 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I feed my puppy daily?
Depends on expected adult weight and current age. An 8-week puppy expected to be 50 lb adult eats roughly 1.5 cups/day split into 4 meals (~1,100 kcal on typical puppy kibble). Toy-breed puppy expected at 8 lb adult: 0.5β0.75 cups/day. Giant-breed puppy (expected 120 lb adult): 3β5 cups/day. Always use a growth-stage AAFCO-compliant puppy formula, and split into 3β4 meals before 6 months to prevent hypoglycemia and support digestion.
When do puppies transition from puppy to adult food?
Small breeds (< 20 lb adult): 9β12 months. Medium breeds (20β50 lb): 12 months. Large breeds (50β90 lb): 12β15 months. Giant breeds (> 90 lb): 18β24 months. Early transition is especially risky for large breeds β the higher calcium in adult foods (vs. controlled calcium in large-breed puppy formulas) can trigger developmental orthopedic disease. Transition over 7β10 days by blending old + new food in increasing ratios.
Can I overfeed a puppy?
Yes β and it's particularly harmful for large and giant breeds. Overfeeding accelerates growth rate beyond what developing joints can support, increasing risk of hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), and hypertrophic osteodystrophy. The classic Kealy 2002 study showed lean-fed Labradors lived 1.8 years longer than free-fed littermates. Feed to ideal body condition score (BCS 4β5/9) β ribs easily felt, slight waist tuck β not until the puppy stops eating.
How many meals per day for a puppy?
8 weeks β 3 months: 4 meals/day (small stomachs, hypoglycemia prevention for toy breeds). 3β6 months: 3 meals/day. 6β12 months: 2β3 meals/day. 12+ months: 2 meals/day (adult schedule). Toy breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkie, Maltese) should stay on 4 meals/day until 6 months to prevent juvenile hypoglycemia β their tiny liver glycogen stores drain quickly between meals.
Do puppies need different food than adult dogs?
Yes, until they finish growing. Puppy formulas have higher protein (26β32 %), higher fat (16β22 %), and different mineral ratios (especially controlled calcium and phosphorus) to support growth. Adult formulas are calibrated for maintenance, not growth. Feeding adult food to a growing puppy produces slower growth and potential deficiencies. Exception: AAFCO “all-life-stages” formulas meet both profiles.
My puppy is skipping meals or seems uninterested β what's wrong?
Occasional skipped meals in healthy puppies past 10 weeks are usually normal (teething, growth plateau, distraction). See the vet immediately if: the puppy refuses 2+ consecutive meals under 10 weeks (hypoglycemia risk), shows lethargy or vomiting, loses weight, or has diarrhea. Hydration should never be skipped β dehydration in puppies develops fast. Make food more palatable with a tablespoon of warm water or unsalted broth if uninterested but healthy.
