Ferret Food Calculator β Daily Portion & Diet Guide
Ferrets are obligate carnivores. 5β7 % body weight in high-protein kibble daily, free-fed. NO grains or fruits β these cause insulinoma, the #2 killer of US pet ferrets.
Calculator
Male ferrets ~2-5 lb; females ~1.5-2.5 lb.
How to use the ferret food calculator
- Weigh your ferret β Males 2β5 lb, females 1.5β2.5 lb typically.
- Check food ingredient list β First ingredient must be meat; no grain fillers; low carb.
- Set up free-feed station β Heavy ceramic bowl filled at all times; ferrets eat 7β9 small meals/day.
- Monitor weight weekly β Healthy ferrets are lean β ribs palpable, visible waist when stretched.
Why ferrets must eat meat and only meat
Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are obligate carnivores β their entire digestive system is optimized for processing whole prey. GI transit time is only 3β4 hours (compared to 12β24 hours for dogs and cats), leaving minimal opportunity to extract nutrients from plant matter. They lack dietary amylase (carbohydrate-digesting enzyme) and have limited gut microbiota for fiber fermentation. Grain-fed ferrets develop insulin dysregulation, dental calculus, and eventually insulinoma.
Insulinoma β a pancreatic beta-cell tumor causing hypoglycemia β is the #2 killer of US pet ferrets (adrenal disease is #1). Lifetime incidence is 20β25 % in US ferrets fed grain-based diets, vs. roughly 8 % in European ferrets fed traditional meat-based diets. The difference is almost entirely attributable to carbohydrate content in commercial βferret food.β Prevention starts with diet selection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should ferrets eat?
Ferrets are strict obligate carnivores β they cannot digest grains, fruits, or vegetables and lack the enzymes to extract nutrition from plant material. Correct diet: high-protein (35β40 %+), high-fat (18β22 %), very low carbohydrate (< 3 %) kibble. Top brands: Wysong Epigen 90, Orijen Cat & Kitten (used widely), Farm-to-Fowl, Wellness Core Original. Alternative: raw or whole-prey diet (mice, chicks) for experienced keepers.
Can ferrets eat cat food instead of ferret food?
Premium kitten food (Orijen Kitten, Wellness Core Kitten) works well β its nutritional profile closely matches ferret requirements. Many experienced ferret owners feed kitten food because it's higher quality than most dedicated ferret foods. AVOID: regular adult cat food (protein too low at 28β32 %), all dog food (insufficient for obligate carnivores), fish-based cat food (palatability addiction; ferrets can refuse other foods after), any food with grain fillers.
How much should I feed my ferret?
Free-feed β ferrets eat small frequent meals (7β9 small meals per day, every 2β3 hours) due to fast metabolism and short GI transit time. Keep the food bowl filled. Approximate daily intake: adult male (2β5 lb) eats 3β5 oz kibble; adult female (1.5β2.5 lb) eats 2β3 oz. Growing kits eat slightly more per pound. Don't try to schedule meals β ferrets genuinely cannot store calories long enough for 2-meal/day feeding.
Why are grains and fruits dangerous for ferrets?
Ferrets lack the pancreatic enzymes, intestinal bacteria, and digestive tract length to process carbohydrates. Grain-heavy diets (cheap “ferret food” with corn, wheat, rice as main ingredients) cause chronic insulin spikes that accelerate insulinoma (pancreatic tumor) development. Insulinoma is the #2 killer of US pet ferrets. Fruits and sugary treats (raisins, bananas, yogurt drops) are similarly dangerous β they spike blood sugar in a system not built to handle it.
Can ferrets eat a raw diet?
Yes β raw or whole-prey diets are considered optimal by many exotic-animal veterinarians. Whole prey (frozen mice, chicks, quail) provides perfect calcium/phosphorus ratio, taurine, and gut-health benefits no kibble can match. Raw-feeding requires more owner effort (safe sourcing, thawing, preventing bacterial contamination) and higher cost ($40β$80/month vs. $20β$40 for kibble). Don't mix raw + kibble meals β use one or the other consistently.
What treats are safe for ferrets?
Safe: freeze-dried chicken, turkey, beef, salmon (Bob's Ferret Snacks, Pure Bites), small bits of cooked egg, raw or cooked meaty bones (chicken wings). Unsafe: all fruits (berries, banana, raisin all dangerous), vegetables (corn, peas, carrot), dairy (lactose-intolerant), bread/crackers/cereals, chocolate (toxic), grapes (kidney failure), xylitol-containing products.
