Gerbils MUST live in pairs or same-sex groups. Solo gerbils suffer severe loneliness.

Minimum enclosure
20 gal (recommended 30)
Bedding depth: 6 inches+ for proper burrowing

Why gerbils need tanks not cages

Gerbils dig extensively β€” up to 3 ft deep in the wild. Wire cages bedding flies everywhere; aquariums/bin cages allow 6-10 inches of deep bedding for natural tunneling.

Best setups: 20-gallon long tank + topper, or custom bin cage. Standard 10-gallon is minimum for pair but too small long-term.

How to use the gerbil cage size calculator

  1. Count gerbils β€” Always in pairs or groups β€” never solo.
  2. Pick tank size β€” 20-gal long minimum for pair; 40-gal breeder ideal.
  3. Plan 6–10 inch bedding depth β€” Paper + aspen mix for tunnel structure.
  4. Add wheel + chew toys β€” 8+ inch solid wheel; wooden chews to satisfy constant gnawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tank does a pair of gerbils need?

Minimum 20-gallon long (30 Γ— 12 Γ— 12 in) for 2 gerbils; 40-gallon breeder (36 Γ— 18 Γ— 16 in) is ideal and allows proper 6–10 inch deep bedding for tunneling. Per German TVT welfare standards: 4,000–5,000 cmΒ² continuous floor space for a pair. Gerbil tanks (glass aquariums with screen tops) are preferred over wire cages because gerbils need deep bedding that wire cages can't contain.

Can gerbils live alone?

No. Gerbils are extremely social animals that live in family clans in the wild. Solo gerbils develop severe depression, self-mutilation, repetitive bar-chewing, and reduced lifespan. Always keep in same-sex pairs introduced young (under 10 weeks) or small groups of same-sex siblings. Adult gerbil introductions usually fail β€” establish pairs at purchase.

Why do gerbils need such deep bedding?

In the wild, gerbils dig extensive tunnel systems 1–3 feet deep with multiple chambers for sleeping, food storage, and nesting. This tunneling is a critical welfare need β€” captive gerbils with shallow bedding develop chronic stress, bar-chewing (sign of deprivation), and repetitive digging behaviors. 6–10 inches of paper/aspen bedding minimum allows them to build actual tunnels. Deeper is always better.

What substrate is safe for gerbils?

Safe: aspen shavings, paper bedding (Carefresh, Kaytee Clean & Cozy), hemp bedding, kiln-dried pine (controversial but generally safe). Unsafe: cedar (toxic phenols cause respiratory and liver disease), fluffy cotton bedding (causes intestinal blockage and limb entanglement), clay/clumping cat litter. Mix paper bedding with aspen for a tunnel-supportive substrate β€” paper alone collapses, aspen alone doesn't bind well.

Do gerbils need a wheel?

Yes β€” gerbils are active runners and need a wheel for exercise. Wheel size minimum 8 inches for Mongolian gerbils; 10 inches ideal. Solid-surface wheels only (silent runner, Niteangel) β€” wire-rung wheels cause foot and tail injuries. Position the wheel where bedding can fall through without blocking, and check for trapped gerbil tails daily.

How long do pet gerbils live?

Average captive lifespan 3–4 years; up to 5 years in excellent housing. This is longer than most small rodents (hamsters 2–3 years, rats 2–3 years, mice 1.5–2 years). Gerbils show age with gray muzzles around age 3, reduced running around 3.5, and typical old-age problems (kidney disease, tumors) in the last 6 months. Buying a young pair means a 3–4 year commitment.
