Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum cage size for 2 guinea pigs?

GuineaPigCages.com recommends a minimum of 7.5 sq ft (e.g. 30″×36″) for two guinea pigs, with 10.5 sq ft preferred (30″×50″). More space reduces fighting, obesity and boredom.

What is a C&C cage?

C&C stands for Cubes & Coroplast. It's a DIY cage built from 14″×14″ metal wire storage-cube grids plus a corrugated plastic (Coroplast) base. Highly customizable, and the de-facto standard in the guinea pig community.

How many grids do I need for 2 guinea pigs?

For 2 pigs, you need at least 6 C&C grids (minimum), 8 grids preferred (the classic 2×4), and 10 grids for ideal.

Can male guinea pigs live together?

Neutered males or brothers raised together usually coexist. Two intact males not raised together often fight, especially if there's a female nearby. Always provide double the minimum space for multiple males.

Do guinea pigs need vertical space?

Not much — guinea pigs are ground animals and don't climb well. Ramps are fine but multi-level cages only count if pigs actually use the upper level. Prioritize floor space.

Is a 30" × 50" cage enough for 3 guinea pigs?

At 10.5 sq ft, a 30"×50" cage meets the minimum for 3 pigs but is below preferred (13 sq ft) and ideal (16 sq ft). Larger is always better.

Can I use a pet-store cage for guinea pigs?

Most pet-store cages sold as 'guinea pig cages' (e.g. 30"×18" = 3.75 sq ft) are far below minimum standards. They were designed for smaller rodents and are inadequate for guinea pigs.
